In the Brno-venkov district, a drunk driver whose car was carrying five children swerved into the opposite lane, lost control, ran off the road and hit a tree. According to police, one child died at the scene, while the other passengers were injured.
“For reasons that are still unclear, the driver crossed into the opposite lane, then left the road and crashed into a tree. Besides the driver, there were five children in the car. All were injured, and one child, unfortunately, did not survive,” police said on social media platform X.
According to available information, it was a standard five-seat passenger car — meaning at least some of the children were travelling without child car seats. Police spokesman Petr Vala said investigators still need to determine which passengers were wearing seatbelts and exactly how the children were seated inside the vehicle.
The man behind the wheel was intoxicated. “A breathalyzer test carried out on the man at the hospital came back positive,” Vala confirmed, without specifying the exact blood alcohol level. According to available information, the children in the car were not from the same family — the driver was reportedly responsible for them as a coach or the head of a children’s camp.
Two medical helicopters — from Brno and from the Vysočina region — were immediately dispatched to the crash site. “From our point of view, this was an emergency situation. One child had already died before we arrived, so there was nothing we could do for them. Two other children suffered serious injuries and were flown by helicopter to the children’s hospital in Brno,” said rescue service spokeswoman Michaela Bothová.
Two more children were taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution, to rule out serious injuries. The driver himself was also taken to hospital, medics said, again as a precaution.
The incident was initially reported as a fire, so volunteer firefighters from Doubravník were also sent to the scene and helped extract the injured from the car. “After the crew from Tišnov arrived, we pulled another three injured people out of the car, carried out fire-prevention measures and secured the vehicle,” firefighters said on the Threads social network. Due to the large number of emergency vehicles involved, the road toward Bělč was closed to traffic.
