German carmaker Volkswagen is recalling more than 70,000 electric cars worldwide because of faulty batteries that could catch fire in extreme cases. This was reported by the DPA agency, citing data from the company and the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
The recall mainly affects the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz models, as well as the Cupra Born. According to the group, internal checks revealed quality problems in some battery cells, caused by manufacturing defects at suppliers.
“In isolated cases, this can lead to increased thermal stress on these batteries. In extreme cases, a fire is possible,” the company said.
The batteries in the recalled cars must be checked at a service centre. Until then, DPA writes, owners are advised to charge such electric cars to a maximum of 80 percent. According to the KBA, no cases of property damage or injury caused by the problem have been recorded so far.
A month ago, Volkswagen announced the recall of several million vehicles, including Škoda cars, over possible steering problems. Lately the group has been facing a number of difficulties: high costs, overcapacity, growing competition from China and US tariffs. It is therefore planning a large-scale restructuring of its business.
This affects owners of the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz and Cupra Born, including foreigners. The battery must be checked at a service centre, and until then the car should not be charged above 80 percent.
