EU and Fifty Countries Demand at UN That Russia Lay Down Arms — US Refuses to Sign Declaration

The European Union and roughly fifty countries issued a joint statement at the United Nations calling on Russia to immediately lay down its arms and agree to a ceasefire. The United States did not join the declaration, according to the website Yevropeiska Pravda, citing the text of the statement provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The signatory states expressed solidarity with Ukraine and "deep concern" over the escalation of Russian actions against civilians and civilian infrastructure across the country. The statement also specifically raised alarm over attacks in the Black Sea, with participants backing efforts to secure an agreement guaranteeing freedom of navigation.

Ukraine Has Already Agreed to a Ceasefire

The document notes that Ukraine agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire back in March 2025. "We call on Russia to finally do the same — this is a necessary step toward constructive diplomacy and negotiations leading to peace," the statement reads.

The signatory countries also demanded that Russia immediately return all detained, forcibly displaced or deported Ukrainian civilians, first and foremost children.

"Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must end its aggression, agree to a ceasefire, and engage constructively in negotiations toward a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law," the statement emphasizes. It was endorsed by 50 countries and the European Union.

Trump Speaks of the Need to End the War

Although the United States was not among the countries that signed the declaration, President Donald Trump told the UN on Tuesday that "it's time to end the war." He said he no longer wants to see footage of people killed in this conflict. Trump added that the United States continues to push for an end to the war and is prepared to use new tariff powers if necessary.
