Fire breaks out at former barracks in Slovak city of Nitra, used to store seized property

A fire has broken out at a complex of former barracks in the Slovak city of Nitra, currently used to store items seized in enforcement proceedings. According to police in the Nitra region, no evacuation of residents has been necessary so far, but people have been advised to stay away from the scene and, as a precaution, to keep the windows and doors of their homes closed.

Fire service spokeswoman Michaela Hundová said the old wooden buildings are ablaze. Firefighters from Nitra and Dražovce are on site, along with volunteer fire brigades, with additional crews being sent in as reinforcements.

Fire brought under control

Nitra Mayor Marek Hattas said the blaze started in a building that was being used to store property seized through debt enforcement proceedings. According to him, firefighters have already brought the fire under control, though extinguishing it completely will take several more hours. The rescuers' main task now is to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring buildings and trees. Teams from Nitra and Dražovce are involved in the operation, supported by volunteers.

Cause of the fire still unknown

The cause of the fire is being investigated. The fire and rescue service noted that it will only be possible to determine it once the fire is fully extinguished and the scene has been safely inspected. City and regional police have advised residents of nearby homes to avoid going outside unless necessary, to steer clear of smoke and combustion products, and not to obstruct fire trucks entering the former barracks grounds.

Authorities have not yet reported any casualties or the extent of material damage. More detailed information is expected only after the fire is fully extinguished and the site has been inspected, which will take several more hours.
