Hungary's parliament strips immunity from PM Magyar and two former Orbán ministers

Hungary's parliament has stripped parliamentary immunity from Prime Minister Magyar and two former ministers in Viktor Orbán's government, Hankó and Szeszták. The decision was backed by all 139 lawmakers present at the session, while representatives of the opposition Fidesz party did not take part in the vote.

What the former ministers are suspected of

Former minister Hankó is suspected of embezzling 17 billion forints (about 1.1 billion crowns). Former minister Szeszták is accused of corruption amounting to 11 billion forints (around 730 million crowns).

Hankó himself has called the criminal case fabricated and politically motivated. "The accusations are false," the former minister said.

According to the Hungarian news portal 24.hu, Szeszták was detained immediately after parliament stripped him of his immunity. The politician's lawyer confirmed this information to the outlet.

Magyar asked to have his own immunity lifted

Unlike the former ministers, Prime Minister Magyar himself initiated the removal of his own parliamentary immunity — so that investigators could reopen a case involving someone else's phone thrown into the Danube.

The incident took place in 2024 at a nightclub: an unknown man was filming Magyar on camera, a conflict broke out between them, after which the politician grabbed the man's phone and threw it into the river.
