Hungary to Introduce Compensation for Diesel Car Owners Over Rising Fuel Prices

The Hungarian government has decided to support diesel car owners as fuel prices climb on world markets. The measure will remain in effect until the end of this year: owners of diesel vehicles with up to 150 horsepower will receive a total compensation of 20,000 forints, roughly 1,335 CZK.

According to Hungary's prime minister, the difference between the former "protected" diesel price and the current market price amounts to about 5,000 forints per fill-up — around 334 CZK. Since the average Hungarian family fills up roughly once a month, that is the amount of compensation they will receive.

Breaking with the old price-freeze practice

Notably, the current government has chosen not to revert to the scheme repeatedly used under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's cabinet, which in similar situations simply capped fuel prices in the past. Instead, it has opted for direct cash payments.

"We will provide direct and effective support to the owners of roughly a million diesel cars and their families," the prime minister said in a video address posted on Facebook on Friday.
