Lavrov Convenes Moscow Roundtable on Ukraine and the West — EU Ambassadors Left Off the Guest List

On September 15, the Diplomatic Academy of Russia's Foreign Ministry will host its 13th roundtable for the diplomatic corps in Moscow. According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, more than 110 ambassadors from the majority of the world's countries have been invited, along with representatives of international organisations.

The event's stated main theme is "the Ukrainian crisis and the West's legal aggression." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to speak.

What Lavrov Is Expected to Say

According to the TASS news agency, citing Zakharova, the head of Russia's Foreign Ministry plans to address what he calls the "opportunistic use of international justice bodies by the Kyiv regime and its Western sponsors." Also on the agenda is the creation of what Moscow describes as "various pseudo-legal mechanisms" designed to justify the alleged unlawful seizure of Russian sovereign assets, as well as attempts to hold Russian officials accountable for purported illegal actions.

Zakharova said the organisers are counting on a "traditionally trusting and constructive exchange of views" on the abuse of international legal norms and instruments, as well as other pressing issues on the international agenda.

EU Diplomats Not Invited

Although the roundtable is specifically meant to discuss the West — including the European Union — and its alleged abuses of the law, not a single ambassador from an EU country has received an invitation. This was confirmed by Czech Foreign Ministry spokesman Chörgő.

"Our ambassador in Moscow has not received an invitation to this roundtable, and as far as we know, neither has any ambassador from other EU member states," he said.
