Lightning Strike Kills Mother and Two-Year-Old Daughter in Florida

In Florida, a lightning strike killed a woman and her two-year-old daughter, members of the Glasgow family. The tragedy unfolded right on the street near their home, according to Prince Moody, a neighbor of the victims.

He said he was at home when he heard a deafening bang that shook the entire building. “My son told me, ‘Dad, there’s a woman lying on the ground, she’s been hit,’” Moody recalled. He was the first to rush to help the two neighbors — he said their bodies were smoking.

Police and firefighters soon arrived on the scene and administered first aid to the victims. However, the mother and daughter could not be saved: shortly after being taken to the hospital, doctors pronounced them dead.

How real is the danger?

According to statistics, the United States records around 37 million lightning strikes every year. Yet, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the odds of any given person being struck by lightning are less than one in a million. It’s worth noting that nearly 90% of lightning strike victims survive.
