The reconstructed section of the D1 highway near the Šmejkalka Bridge in the Central Bohemian Region underwent its first load tests on the night from Friday to Saturday. Engineers tested the structure under a load of 256 tonnes, assessing deflection, vibrations and the condition of the concrete. For the duration of the tests, road crews completely closed this section of the highway and set up detours — one for cars and a separate one for trucks.
However, problems arose almost immediately after the restrictions came into force: some truck drivers ignored the road signs and failed to follow their designated route. As a result, a traffic accident occurred on one of the detour roads, blocking traffic for several hours. On another route, a car got stuck, causing further congestion.
The situation worsened on Saturday evening, when the bridge had to be closed again. The road authority did not specify whether this was related to the continuation of the tests or to the aftermath of the previous day's problems.
