Mass Brawl With a Club Halts Traffic on Bridge in Central Prague

On Monday, at around 4:30 pm, a violent mass brawl broke out on Hlávkův Bridge in Prague, bringing traffic on one of the city's busiest routes to a complete standstill. According to police, the incident was caught on camera by passersby — the footage, shot against the backdrop of Stromovka Park and the Hilton hotel's silhouette, shows several men and women shouting and lunging at each other, first trading punches and elbows.

Later, one of the attackers pulled out a wooden stick — police believe it was a pickaxe handle — and struck his opponents with it several times. The altercation ended with the same stick being smashed against the windshield of a car, after which all those involved got in and drove off.

What police know so far

The footage does not capture how the fight began or what happened immediately afterward. According to police spokesperson Eva Kropáčová, officers arrived at the scene after witnesses called in and detained two people. Four others were injured.

Preliminary information suggests the clash actually took place in at least two locations close to one another. Police have not yet disclosed what triggered the hostility between those involved or whether it was a case of settling scores — the investigation has only just begun.

"We are currently trying to establish what caused the conflict and all the circumstances surrounding it," the police spokesperson said. Investigators have appealed to potential witnesses, especially anyone who filmed the incident, to come forward with information via the police hotline at 158.
