Okamura Receives Iranian Ambassador Days After Czech Foreign Ministry

The Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura, has received Iran's Ambassador, Seyed Majid Ghafeleh Bashi. According to Okamura himself, the meeting was held at Iran's request, with talks focusing on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and possible ways to resolve it.

"We advocate active communication with countries around the world," the Speaker wrote, commenting on the outcome of the meeting.

The Radio Farda Controversy

Okamura's meeting with the ambassador came just ten days after Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motoristé party) summoned the same diplomat for an official explanation. The summons followed Iran's decision to designate the émigré broadcaster Radio Farda — which transmits from Czechia as part of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty — as a legitimate military target.

According to Macinka, Ambassador Bashi tried to downplay the seriousness of the threat at the time, claiming the statement "was not entirely official information."

Iran's Alliance with Russia

Iran remains a long-standing ally of Russia and has supplied Moscow with "Shahed" attack drone technology throughout the war against Ukraine. In turn, Russia shares intelligence with Tehran amid Iran's confrontation with the United States and Israel.
