Seven Drunk Cyclists Collide on Bike Path in Pardubice Region

On the evening of July 31, seven cyclists collided at once on a shared bike and pedestrian path between the villages of Živanice and Lázně Bohdaneč in the Pardubice Region. According to police spokeswoman Dita Holečková, every single person involved in the incident turned out to be intoxicated.

Four of the seven were injured, and three were hospitalized. Two of the injured could not be breathalyzed on the spot due to the nature of their injuries — blood tests later confirmed that they, too, had been drinking. The severity of the injuries may also have been compounded by the fact that some of the cyclists weren't wearing helmets.

Everyone was drunk — even the witnesses

Police say breathalyzer tests weren't limited to those involved in the crash — three bystanders who happened to be cycling nearby, with no connection to the accident, were tested as well. Every single person tested came back positive, with blood alcohol levels ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 per mille.

One group of cyclists had been riding along the path from Živanice, while the other was just coming out from the direction of Lázně Bohdaneč — the two groups collided right where their paths crossed.

Police appeal for witnesses

Traffic police in Pardubice are asking drivers and cyclists who passed through this stretch on July 31 at around 10:19 pm, and who may have captured the incident on a dashcam, to come forward — along with any other witnesses who haven't yet given a statement. Anyone with information is asked to call 974 566 254 or the police line at 158.
