From 1 July 2027, the way pensions are paid in Czechia will change: instead of a “sliding” period, pensions will be paid for a calendar month. Until now, the money covered the period from one payment date to the day before the next one. Experts assure that pensioners will lose nothing.
If, for example, a pensioner’s payment date is the 10th, the payment made that day will cover the period from the first to the last day of the month. “The new system should be easier for pensioners to understand,” said Jiřina Svobodová, head of the pension department at Freedom Financial Services. According to her, the situation in which the January payment is higher than February’s because of a supplement, leaving people worried that their pension has been cut, will disappear.
The confusion at the start of the year arises like this: for some pensions, a payment received back in December extends into January of the following year. With the annual indexation, the increased amount applies up to the January payment date. That is why some recipients do not understand why their January payment was higher than February’s.
The difference does not come from a pension cut: in January, a one-off compensation for the part of the month before the payment date is added to the pension. “The January supplement is not a bonus, but a technical adjustment of the indexation for the first days of the year. It is there so that pensioners with a later payment date also get the increase from 1 January,” Svobodová explained.
From 2028, she says, misunderstandings about the size of the pension after indexation should no longer arise: “Indexation will be reflected directly in the January payment for the whole calendar month.” Only the technical way indexation is reflected in the payment is changing, and pensioners need not fear losing part of their money.
The switch from the “sliding” month to the calendar month was approved back in 2023 by the previous government. “This will unify pension payments for all recipients, and the system will be clearer,” said Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL), then Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. Under the original plans, the change was to take effect as early as July 2025, but the deadline was pushed back by two years, to mid-2027. Pensions paid by other ministries are already paid for a calendar month, so the change will not affect them.
Jitka Brenčič, spokeswoman for the Czech Social Security Administration, noted that because the Chamber of Deputies is currently discussing changes to pension rules, further amendments to the payment mechanism cannot be ruled out during the legislative process.
This applies to everyone who receives a pension through the Czech Social Security Administration, including foreigners. From 1 July 2027, the payment will relate to a calendar month rather than a “sliding” period.
