Czechia hit by overnight frost, but heatwave on the way for the weekend

Notable overnight frost was recorded across Czechia on Wednesday morning: the lowest temperature, -2.8°C, was measured at the Jeleni station in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory). Six other stations in the cold valleys of Šumava, the Ore Mountains and the Jizera Mountains also recorded sub-zero readings.

The cold snap affected much of the country — according to weather station data, out of 269 monitoring points that reported minimum daily temperatures on Wednesday, 197 stations saw readings drop below 10°C. The warmest spots were in the lowlands — in southern and central Moravia, as well as the Elbe Lowland (Polabí). The highest minimum temperature was recorded at Prague's Klementinum, the only station where the reading did not fall below 15°C.

What's behind the sharp contrasts

Weather across Central Europe is currently being shaped by a powerful area of high pressure. It is drawing warm but dry air into the region, keeping skies mostly clear. It's precisely this clear weather that allows for strong overnight cooling, even as daytime temperatures gradually rise.

Heat already on its way

Forecasters expect morning temperatures to dip to 5–12°C on Thursday, 7–14°C on Friday, and 9–16°C on Saturday. However, real summer heat is set to arrive in Czechia this weekend, quickly pushing up overnight lows as well. On Sunday and Monday, some regions are expected to see their first tropical nights of the year, when temperatures fail to drop below 20°C.
