Prague Pride 2024: For the First Time, the August 8 March Will End on Štvanice Instead of Letná

The annual Prague Pride festival returns to the Czech capital this year with its signature march taking place on August 8 — and for the first time in the event's history, the route will finish not on Letná Plain, but on Štvanice Island.

According to organizers, Letná had served as the festival's traditional finale spot for years, but the location had become a logistical headache and offered little comfort for attendees. "On hot days, Letná turned into a dusty furnace, and when it rained, it became an obstacle course of puddles," explained Nikola Paleníčková, the festival's programme director. Štvanice, by contrast, offers more trees, shade and grass, plus the added bonus of the nearby river for a refreshing swim.

The march route itself is also changing: the procession will kick off at Wenceslas Square, cross the Hlávka Bridge, and head to the newly established Pride Park on the island. Beyond the march, this year's programme includes Pride Village on Střelecký Island, packed with cultural events; Pride House, featuring talks and lectures; Pride Café, aimed at Prague's international community; and Pride Youth, geared toward attendees under 30. Exhibitions, film screenings, theatre performances, sporting events, workshops, speed dating and parties round out the schedule.

Among this year's new additions is the "Biggest Queer Czechness" competition, with the winner to be announced on the Purple Stage at Pride Park on Štvanice. The festival will also debut Stage Out, a talent show open to both emerging and seasoned queer performers.

Admission to the march and most programme events remains free, though organizers are encouraging a voluntary contribution of 200 crowns, citing growing difficulties in securing funding for the festival. "The simplest thing to do is just show up — whether it's for the march, Pride Park on Štvanice, or any of the events throughout the week," the organizing committee said.

Organizers stress that attendee safety has become an especially pressing concern following the terrorist attack at the CSD parade in Berlin, which claimed one life and left dozens injured. In an official statement, Prague Pride expressed condolences to the victims and to Berlin's organizers, calling the attack an unthinkable act of hatred directed at people who simply wanted to "celebrate uniqueness, diversity, respect and love."

In light of this, visitor safety has been declared the Prague festival's absolute top priority. Organizers say they are working closely with Czech police, who will be present throughout the entire programme — both at Pride Village and during the march itself. Security personnel will be stationed across all festival zones, and part of the team has undergone special training in conflict de-escalation. Bag checks will be conducted at the entrance to the festival's opening event at Pride Village.

Organizers note that annual statistics from the international human rights organization ILGA-Europe show a growing trend of march bans, restrictions on civil society organizations, the spread of disinformation, and a resurgence of laws curbing public expressions of support for the LGBT community. In their assessment, hostile rhetoric is increasingly spilling beyond social media and into politics, translating into concrete restrictions or attacks — as seen in Berlin.
