US Records First Two Deaths from Intestinal Parasite Linked to Taco Bell Salad

The United States has recorded its first two deaths linked to an outbreak of the intestinal parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which health officials have tied to an iceberg lettuce salad served at the fast-food chain Taco Bell. In response to the outbreak, the chain has already pulled the salad from menus in several regions, according to US health authorities.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that both patients who died had serious underlying health conditions, which were reportedly worsened by the intestinal illness and resulting dehydration.

Michigan has been hit especially hard: since Friday, the state has logged 461 new cases, bringing the total number of infections there to 11,234. Of those, 193 people were hospitalized, even though the illness is typically mild.

Nationwide, more than 18,500 cases have now been diagnosed or laboratory-confirmed. Given the scale of the outbreak, experts say they are also investigating other possible sources of infection beyond the Taco Bell salad.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis can appear up to two weeks after exposure to the parasite. Those infected may suffer from watery diarrhea, cramps and bloating for weeks. Severe dehydration can require hospitalization. Treatment typically involves a seven-to-ten-day course of antibiotics.
