Three-time Stanley Cup winner with Chicago Marián Hossa has a fortune of an estimated €140 million (almost 3 billion crowns), according to Forbes magazine, which compiles the ranking. That is €20 million (over 416 million crowns) more than a year ago.
The 47-year-old Hossa earns not only from investing the money he made during his rich career, but above all from the food business. His family owns a company making pirogies and flour-based dishes and is among the biggest players on the Slovak market.
Tied for 50th place is another great of Slovak hockey — and in his case that is literally true: the fortune of Zdeno Chára is estimated at €110 million. It has neither risen nor fallen since last year. The Boston legend now invests in stocks and bonds.
Just two places lower is Marián Gáborík with exactly €100 million. The legendary forward owns several luxury properties around the world: from the USA and Croatia to his native Trenčín.
The last of the former athletes on the list, and the only one who is not a hockey player, is Marek Hamšík. With €90 million (almost 1.9 billion crowns), he placed 57th. The former Napoli midfielder started doing business during his successful career: together with his father, former hockey player Michal Handzuš, he created several real estate projects. Hamšík also owns a castle in Vlkanová and runs a children’s entertainment centre. He is also involved in football in Banská Bystrica and is an assistant to coach Vladimír Weiss Sr. with the Slovak national team.
