The Regional Court in Olomouc has sentenced a minor who pleaded guilty to killing two people and carrying out a series of attacks on random men in Uničov and Zábřeh in the Šumperk region. Due to the defendant's age, the hearing was held behind closed doors, with only the verdict itself announced publicly. The ruling has not yet come into force, as the defendant has reserved the right to appeal.
According to Petr Sušil, chairman of the judicial panel at the Olomouc Regional Court, the court did not impose the maximum sentence only because the defendant fully admitted guilt on all counts — a factor the judges had to take into account when handing down the sentence.
Last summer, the teenager attacked three men in Uničov one after another. He not only beat two of them but also robbed them, taking their personal belongings — sneakers, a mobile phone, a watch. He attacked a fourth victim in the same town on 3 October, inflicting serious injuries, including brain swelling. The man died in hospital on 16 October.
The most brutal crime took place on the night of 18–19 October last year. The victim was a 57-year-old man who was not originally from Zábřeh in the Šumperk region but had lived there for many years in a dormitory. He was not homeless. According to the court, the teenager demanded a cigarette from him, and when refused, attacked him.
According to court records, the victim weighed only 47 kilograms and stood no chance against his attacker. The court established that the teenager kicked the man to death. The victim had a reputation as a calm, quiet man, and the two had not known each other before the attack.
"The injuries the teenager inflicted on the victim using only his feet were horrifying. Neither I nor my colleagues investigating the case have ever recorded this degree of head trauma in our entire careers," Jan Lisický, head of the Olomouc criminal police, told journalists shortly after the murder.
The body was discovered by a witness at 7:30 a.m. on 19 October, who called the police. The suspect was detained roughly 13 hours after the discovery was reported. According to police, the decisive role in the arrest was played by data obtained by forensic experts during the autopsy. In the course of the further investigation, detectives also uncovered other crimes previously committed by the teenager.
