The ice breaks: President Pavel to meet with Prime Minister Babiš

Czech President Petr Pavel will meet with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the President's Office has announced. According to the office, the talks will focus on coordinating foreign policy — including the head of state's participation in the UN General Assembly — as well as other pressing issues.

Babiš had already mentioned the upcoming meeting with the president over the weekend. The agreement looks like a reconciliation following a recent conflict: just a short while ago, the prime minister was refusing to hold talks with the president.

Dispute over the NATO summit

The disagreement stemmed from the question of Pavel's attendance at the NATO summit in Ankara. In the end, the Constitutional Court allowed the head of state to make the trip, issuing a preliminary ruling after the president filed a petition seeking clarification on the division of powers.

Following that ruling, the prime minister's tone noticeably softened — Babiš stopped routinely referring to Pavel as the opposition leader, as he had done at the height of the dispute.

It has also been reported that the coronation jewels will be on display at Prague Castle from September 19 to 28.
