US President Donald Trump has announced the conclusion of an agreement on Greenland, calling it a historic event. He made the statement on his Truth Social platform.
According to Trump, the deal gives the United States "permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland" and fully addresses numerous American concerns. "The dream of the United States has become a reality. This is a historic and special moment," the American president wrote.
Since taking office last year, Trump has repeatedly stated that the US should gain control over Greenland. Initially, his interest in the Arctic island was explained primarily by its rich natural resources; later he began justifying the need to own the island by citing America's national security interests. The president did not even rule out the use of force, arguing that the island holds strategic importance for the US and that Denmark is unable to counter China and Russia in the region.
Such statements have alarmed a number of European nations that are US allies within NATO. In response to Trump's rhetoric, Denmark, together with a dozen other European countries, launched military exercises in Greenland called Arctic Endurance in January of this year.
