Trump Pledges to Scrap Tariffs on Irish Whiskey

US President Donald Trump announced at the awards ceremony for the Irish Open that he intends to lift tariffs on Irish whiskey. He said virtually everyone had been lobbying him on the issue, including several professional golfers.

"Everybody's been bugging me about this," the Republican said. "And I said: on behalf of the United States of America, I will remove the tariffs on Irish whiskey."

Irish whiskey is currently subject to a 15% tariff imposed by Trump on imports from the European Union. Back in May, the US president had already announced the removal of certain tariffs on British whisky, including Scotch and spirits produced in Northern Ireland.

Also in May, the Irish Whiskey Association called for the trade barriers to be dropped, arguing that doing so would benefit many American companies that carry Irish products in their portfolios and would reduce uncertainty for consumers.

Trump did not specify exactly when the tariffs would be lifted.
