Tiger kills man at Yorkshire Wildlife Park zoo: what we know

Tiger kills man who entered its enclosure at a British zoo

On Saturday afternoon at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England, a tiger killed a man who had climbed into its enclosure. Visitors were evacuated, and the park will stay closed for the rest of the weekend.

Witnesses said they heard sounds resembling gunshots and saw an air ambulance circling above the enclosure. One visitor told British media that a large black tarpaulin was stretched over the tiger enclosure while people were led out of the park. According to the British press, the man was attacked by a tiger named Altai.

Doncaster police said the tiger remained in its enclosure after the incident and the zoo was evacuated immediately. Park management said it is working closely with the authorities to establish exactly what happened. The safety of visitors, staff and animals remains its top priority.

The park has operated since 2009, and its “Land of the Tigers” exhibit opened in 2011. This purpose-built, two-acre reserve is home to Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies with about 500 individuals left in the wild.
