Casting agency founders Michal Deus and Miro Mráz are launching MovixBox, a streaming platform in Czechia built around vertical mini-dramas — a Czech answer to the Chinese hits ReelShort and DramaBox. The service launches at the end of summer and will offer more than 20 original series shot with Czech actors.
The idea was inspired by the success of Chinese mini-drama platforms, which in just four years have each gathered around 50 million users and together control 70% of the global market for the format. On average, people spend more time on them daily than in the Netflix mobile app. “When I was in Singapore recently, people on the metro and buses were already watching nothing else, just these kinds of series,” Deus told the outlet CzechCrunch.
MovixBox is betting on short, 90–120-second episodes grouped into seasons of 20 episodes, built around classic plots of revenge, love and tragedy, with a mandatory cliffhanger at the end of each episode. “We’re the first to professionalize this format in Czechia and Slovakia. We already have several titles in production and will soon start publishing the first teasers,” says Mráz.
Monetization will be built on microtransactions: either a subscription or buying tokens for individual episodes. The founders’ investment already runs into tens of millions of crowns, the platform is technically ready, and filming is currently underway. The partners don’t rule out bringing in an outside investor, and they put the break-even point at around 100,000 users.
The project features well-known Czech actors — Tomáš Měcháček (who appeared in the film “Known Unknowns”) and Hà Thanh Špetlíková (the series “Clinic in the Rose Garden”). For now the team plans to produce only its own content, but over time hopes to also buy in foreign series. The project’s main trump card against its Chinese rivals is said to be precisely its Czech actors and local flavor — and in two years MovixBox plans to expand into other Central European markets as well.
