15-Year-Old Opens Fire on Classmates in Turkey, Injuring 11

In Turkey, a 15-year-old vocational school student opened fire outside the Ince Uzmezova Anatolian Vocational and Technical High School, wounding eleven of his classmates. The incident took place at around eight o'clock local time (seven a.m. Prague time), the BBC reports, citing Turkish media.

Footage from security cameras has since surfaced online, showing an armed young man standing outside the school before fleeing with the weapon still in hand. Turkish police later detained the shooter. The motive behind the attack has not yet been established.

Suspect's Parents and Grandfather Detained

Along with the attacker himself, police have detained his parents and grandfather — the weapon used in the shooting reportedly belonged to the grandfather. "When it comes to the safety of our children, no carelessness or tolerance of irresponsibility can be accepted," said Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek.

According to him, investigators are examining the case from several angles, looking into how the teenager gained access to the weapon, how it was stored, whether his parents fulfilled their duty of care and supervision, and whether the attack may have been preceded by bullying.

New Security Measures Following April Attacks

Turkey was already shaken by two school shootings back in April, after which authorities introduced additional security measures for the new academic year, including stricter controls on firearm ownership. Before the April attacks, no incidents of this kind had ever been recorded in the country.
