Bear Rips Apart Sheep in Slovak Farm Pen — Attack Caught on Camera, Animal Shot Dead

In Slovakia, a female bear attacked a flock of sheep penned on a farm — and the attack was caught on camera by Deputy Environment Minister Filip Kuffa, who later shared the footage. The video shows the sheep panicking and scattering around the enclosure as they try to escape the predator.

According to Kuffa, the animal struck the farm twice, and it was during the second attack that the bear was shot dead. Juraj Žiak, head of the bear-capture unit, told local media that during the repeat attack the predator managed to injure at least four or five sheep. “The special team shot the animal right in the pen, during the attack itself,” he said. The full extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.

Sheep Being Stockpiled for Winter

Žiak noted that the bear had been visiting the farm for quite some time, dragging the sheep it killed into the forest and burying them there to build up a food stash. Rescuers found the remains of several dead sheep scattered around the farm. It turned out that the animal attacking the flock was an old female with worn and damaged teeth — experts estimate she was around 15 years old and weighed 134 kilograms.

The same team, which specializes in dealing with brown bears, had earlier put down another predator — a bear that had attacked an elderly woman shortly before in the village of Blatnica in the Martin district — as well as a female bear that had repeatedly wandered into the settlement of Podhradie (part of Konská) in the same district.

According to Slovak authorities, more than 30 bears have already been shot dead in the country since the start of this year, compared with up to 213 culled over the whole of last year.
