Brewery in Vysoký Chlumec, Operating Since the 15th Century, Now Abandoned and Overgrown

In the small town of Vysoký Chlumec in the Příbram region, locked gates and knee-high weeds have replaced barrels of beer. This is what remains today of a brewery once known throughout Czechia, whose history stretches back to the 15th century.

Beer production on this site survived even the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, but it couldn't withstand modern economic upheaval. In 2015, the brewery was bought by the Chinese company CEFC, and by 2021, brewing at the sprawling complex had come to a halt — officially described as a temporary measure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet five years on, there is no sign that production will ever resume. The buildings and grounds of what was once a thriving enterprise continue to decay, left abandoned and swallowed by weeds.
