British MPs Demand Answers Over Country's Eurovision Flops

The UK Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee has decided to investigate why British entries at Eurovision keep landing near the very bottom of the scoreboard. The announcement came from committee chair Caroline Dinenage.

The concern is well-founded: in May this year, the performer known by the stage name Look Mum No Computer finished last, scoring just a single point. In 2023, singer Mae Muller landed only one spot above the bottom of the table, and two years before that, James Newman took last place with a grand total of zero points.

"We want to understand who chooses our entrants, on what basis, and whether our sorry track record in recent years comes down to poor song choices, weak performances, or something else entirely," Dinenage said.

Who's in charge of picking the UK's entry

The one shining exception to Britain's run of bad luck remains singer Sam Ryder, who took second place at the 2022 contest — the country's best result in years.

The process for selecting the UK's Eurovision representative is well known: the decision usually falls to industry insiders, but the final say — and in some years the only say — rests with public broadcaster the BBC. The broadcaster itself has noted that in some countries, the public gets to choose the act, and Britain has experimented with this approach too. The last time was in 2019, when Michael Rice was sent to the contest in Tel Aviv. He, too, finished last.

30 years without a win

MPs have not yet said when they'll call in those responsible for selecting the UK's entrants for questioning, but they don't intend to drag their feet. Next year marks 30 years since Britain's last Eurovision victory, and lawmakers are keen to avoid yet another embarrassment.

According to the BBC, Eurovision remains one of the most-watched music events in the country, drawing millions of viewers. The MPs' initiative is meant to head off another "national" letdown.

"We're concerned about the reputation of the United Kingdom, which in recent years has scored zero points or ended up at the bottom of the table despite having world-renowned composers and musicians," Dinenage said indignantly.
