Camera Captures Plane Crashing Into Utah Lake: Two Pilots Killed

Airfield cameras in the US state of Utah captured the moment a light aircraft, a Cirrus SR22, crashed into Utah Lake while on approach for landing. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the pilot and a passenger — who also held a pilot's licence — died in the crash.

Footage shows the plane flying over the runway, re-entering the traffic pattern and preparing to land. Shortly afterward, while turning back toward the runway, the aircraft began to lose speed and altitude.

What the investigation found

The inspection revealed no technical faults with the aircraft. According to the NTSB, during the manoeuvre the pilot exceeded the critical angle of attack, beyond which the wing can no longer generate sufficient lift. As a result, the plane entered a spin and plunged into the waters of Utah Lake.

Just before impact, the aircraft's ballistic parachute — standard equipment on Cirrus planes — began to deploy. However, investigators note that it did not have enough time to fully open and prevent the plane from hitting the water.
