A candidate named Hitler Mussolini has won a district election in Peru and will become mayor of a sparsely populated mountain region in the centre of the country. According to Peruvian media, he received 229 votes, or 34.54% of the electorate.
The coincidence with the names of two far-right European dictators of the twentieth century, local media note, points neither to an ideological link nor to any political views. The winner himself has not yet commented on his election.
Hitler Mussolini is already the third Peruvian politician with a notorious name to be elected to office. In 2021, the surgeon Hitler Saavedra Casternoque was elected to the Peruvian Congress, but died in office three years later. In 2018, the left-wing politician Hitler Gueclen Alba Sánchez, known as “the good Hitler”, won municipal elections in the Yungar district, beating the right-wing candidate Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde.
Parents in Latin America often name their children after famous people. In 2021 and 2024, the São Leopoldo city council in Brazil included 38-year-old businessman Hitler Cleber Pedersetti, whom police accused of embezzling public funds.
It has happened in other parts of the world too. Adolf Uunona remained mayor of the Ompundja district in Namibia for many years: in November 2025 he was elected to the post for the fifth time, and after the latest election he officially dropped his middle name. Politicians with the name also include Meghalaya's Indian environment minister Adolf Lu Hitler Marak and former Indonesian Karawang councillor Hitler Nababan.
