Flight from Victoria to Toronto Cancelled After Child Refuses to Buckle Up

A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria, Canada, to Toronto had to be aborted and the aircraft returned to the terminal — all because of a small child who stood up on their seat and refused to fasten their seatbelt. The airline confirmed the incident itself.

The resulting delay meant the plane missed its departure window before midnight, when the airport's runway closes for the night, forcing passengers to be rebooked onto a flight the following day.

What the airline and experts are saying

According to Porter Airlines, attempts by the child's parent and the cabin crew to resolve the situation were unsuccessful. "The aircraft could not depart in such an unsafe condition, so the crew made the decision to return to the gate and deplane both passengers," the company said in a statement.

Lea Tousseau, a children's aviation safety expert, told the BBC that by halting the flight, the crew were protecting the safety of everyone on board — including the child. "Unrestrained children can become projectiles," she warned, comparing the situation to loose luggage, which during turbulence — especially on takeoff and landing — can injure passengers.

Social media divided: firmness or compassion?

The incident sparked heated online debate over how tolerant airlines should be toward families travelling with young children, and how strictly parents should be expected to follow carrier rules. Some commentators argued the episode reflects a lack of parental discipline — Fox News morning host Charles Hurt said he supports physical discipline for children, remarking: "We've all been that parent. But this is too much."

A different perspective came from Arieh Kovler, a passenger on the same flight, who told CBC News that the child didn't appear spoiled so much as frightened. "He just kept hiding under the seat. Whenever they tried to buckle him in, he'd somehow slip out from underneath," he said.

Similar incidents at other airlines

Many online commentators questioned why an entire flight had to be cancelled over one child, instead of simply removing the child and their family. A similar case occurred in 2018, when a father and daughter were removed from a Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Atlanta after being filmed during deplaning. According to the passenger who recorded the incident, the child had calmed down after a tantrum and sat quietly for more than five minutes, yet the crew still informed the father they were being taken off the flight.

Southwest Airlines said at the time that, according to initial reports, there had been an "escalating conversation between crew and a passenger travelling with a young child" on board. Another similar incident occurred in 2012 involving JetBlue, when a family removed from a flight later accused the airline of heartlessness during an appearance on NBC's Today show. JetBlue explained that the passengers had repeatedly failed to follow crew instructions, prompting the captain to decide on their removal for the safety of everyone on board.
