Three signs of an emotional affair in your partner and what to do

Three signs your partner is having an emotional affair

An emotional affair leaves no evidence you can catch a partner with for a long time. It starts with a shift in closeness: who gets access to their feelings and who they tell first about everything happening in their life. As family therapist Adam Lane Smith warns, by the time you feel the change strongly enough to confront them, the affair may have been going on for months.

1. Emotional attention shifts to another person

You begin to sense that something is off. There is little tangible proof yet, but you notice that whatever happens, your partner immediately texts or calls this person, even though they used to seek support from you. They talk about this person a lot, and feel calmer after the conversation.

Sometimes, when meeting friends or family, your partner suddenly mentions that they got a promotion, that they had a headache all day yesterday, or that they got a speeding ticket. You are surprised: before, they would have celebrated with you, called to ask what to take for a headache, or complained to you about the fine, and this time none of that happened. At home you ask for an explanation, and they reply: “But I told you exactly that.”

“This is a special kind of bond. It has nothing to do with sex or marriage vows. Yet,” the therapist warns. That is exactly why an emotional affair is still a real betrayal, even if nothing physical happened.

Friendship looks different: it supports your relationship and does not compete with it. It makes sense to confide in friends a person has known for years, longer than they have known their spouse. But if this is a brand-new acquaintance, and you get less attention because it goes to them, “you have been replaced.”

Perhaps it is not your partner who is drifting away, but you. Ask yourself: Who do I turn to when something worries me? Who do I text when something goes well for me? Who is my quiet harbor?

2. At home they are distant, while giving everything to someone else

At home your partner is neutral, answers briefly and says little. Elsewhere they are full of energy, share stories, joke, show vulnerability and enthusiasm, and hold long conversations. Asked how the day went, they say: “Fine.” What are they thinking about? “Nothing.” What is going on? “Nothing!” If you press them on why they have changed, they are supposedly just tired.

Behind this redirection of emotional connection lies a mechanism called co-regulation. “The nervous system builds a bond through repetition. When you feel bad and share it with someone who calms you, your body fixes that person as a source of safety, relief and even pleasure. If you do this often, the brain rewires itself and creates new connections,” Smith explains. So when a partner says “it’s nothing, we’re just chatting,” in reality it is about everything.

When you realize something is going on, you start checking, questioning, hovering over the phone, listening for tone of voice and watching who they talk to. And suddenly you are the problem, not the fact that your partner redirected their attention: the argument shifts to your insecurity, your controlling behavior, your unwillingness to accept their friendship, or your jealousy.

3. They enjoy showing their best side

Few people understand the third sign. Many emotional affairs rest on how a person feels in the new relationship. The new person is usually less important than the fresh identity they awaken in your partner.

The new connection is intense. Your partner may say: “We’re just talking. She understands me so well. I finally feel like myself again.” Behind this is a desire to experience a version of themselves that they miss: the one they were before kids, the wedding, the mortgage, the conflicts, the problems in bed, the resentments, the exhaustion and the routine. “The initial attraction is driven primarily by the brain’s reward system, and its main engine is novelty. You are not losing to someone better. A tested relationship is being compared with an untested intoxication,” the expert says.

How to bring your partner back into the relationship

First, check the facts against the three signs. Then try to calm down and talk to your partner honestly and openly. The therapist suggests these phrases:

“I notice that you share more with her (him) than with me.” “I feel emotional distance growing between us.” “I feel our connection is weakening and something else is pushing it out.” “Let’s do something about it before it’s too late.”

Start by mentioning a shared goal, name your partner’s pattern of behavior and suggest one concrete next step. According to Smith, the path to repair begins when emotional attention returns to what the two of us want.
