Czech Environment Ministry to allocate 250 million crowns for pond construction and repairs

The Czech Ministry of the Environment is launching a new support programme under which fish farms will be able to receive 250 million crowns for building new ponds and reconstructing existing ones, the ministry has announced.

The programme continues an earlier initiative: between 2016 and 2024, the ministry disbursed more than one billion crowns for 103 ponds across four stages. According to the ministry, the supported sites help retain water in the landscape and are designed to handle a flood wave of an intensity expected no more than once every hundred years.

Why ponds matter

The ministry notes that each such pond is an important element of the landscape: it helps maintain the local microclimate, stabilises groundwater levels, and serves as a habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants. Ponds are traditionally tied to the Czech landscape — and, along with them, to centuries of pond-based fish farming, including the breeding of freshwater fish.

According to the 2024 water management report, the Czech Republic has around 24,000 ponds and reservoirs, covering a total area of roughly 52,000 hectares.
