Fire Breaks Out in Building in Prague's Vinohrady: People Rescued Through Windows

In Prague's Vinohrady district, a two-story building on Francouzská Street caught fire in the evening — firefighters began rescuing people through windows using ladder trucks, said Prague fire department spokesman Vojtěch Rotschedl. Police also responded to the scene.

Fire crews arrived at the building around 6:00 p.m. According to Rotschedl, people were rescued and evacuated both from inside the building and with the help of aerial equipment. Several evacuees were handed over to paramedics right at the scene.

The fire engulfed the building's first floor. By 6:20 p.m. firefighters had extinguished the open flames, though work at the scene continued afterward.

Casualties After the Fire

Paramedics examined eight rescued people at the scene. A woman around 70 years old was hospitalized with a hand injury. The same kind of injury — a hand injury — also required hospitalization for one of the firefighters involved in putting out the blaze: he was taken to the surgical department, said emergency services spokesman Karel Kirs.

Fire Halts Traffic in the Area

The fire shut down car traffic on Francouzská Street and suspended tram lines 4, 21 and 22.
