At the Folmava/Furth im Wald border crossing between Czechia and Bavaria, German police stopped a car driven by a 59-year-old German national over the weekend. According to police, the man himself admitted to officers that he was bringing a prostitute over from Czechia.

However, his Nigerian passenger turned out to lack the necessary documents, and officers barred her from entering Germany. What's more, the woman now faces charges for attempting to cross the border illegally.

Border checks within the Schengen Area

Germany is part of the Schengen Area, where internal borders are, in principle, not supposed to be checked. Nevertheless, German authorities have been monitoring the border with Austria since 2015. In October 2023, checks were extended to the borders with Czechia, Poland and Switzerland.

In September 2024, the previous German government ordered tighter controls on the borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark as well. Berlin says the measures are aimed at combating illegal migration.
