Huge tanker rams into Chinese fishing boat off Singapore

A large tanker collided with a Chinese fishing vessel off the coast of Singapore last Thursday. According to Reuters, the incident took place on one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, though no injuries were reported.

The cargo tanker First Margo, sailing under the Panamanian flag, measures 229 metres in length. It struck the much smaller fishing boat Lu Tin Yuan Yu 108, which is just 49 metres long. According to the agency, both vessels had left their anchorage at roughly the same time and were travelling in the same direction.

Following the impact, a huge amount of water poured into the smaller vessel, causing it to list sharply to one side. The crew managed to film the frightening scene as it unfolded. Despite the severity of the collision, no one was hurt, and both ships were able to continue under their own power.

The cause of the accident is now being investigated. Authorities are working to determine what led to the collision on one of the planet's key trade routes.
