Lihovar Smíchov: How a Former Distillery Became Prague's Newest District

Lihovar Smíchov: How a Former Distillery Became Prague

On the left bank of the Vltava, right on the border between Smíchov and Zlíchov, a new urban quarter called Lihovar Smíchov has risen — one of the most striking examples of how Prague's old industrial zones are being transformed into contemporary living spaces.

The development stands on the site of the former Zlíchov distillery, whose history stretches back to the 19th century. Several architectural landmarks from the original works have survived, including the old boiling house, the factory chimney and the brick façades that recall the era when spirits were produced here. These protected structures have been carefully woven into the new development, so Smíchov's industrial past remains clearly visible alongside the modern buildings.

Not a museum, but a living quarter

Today's Lihovar is far from a frozen relic of the industrial age — it's a fully functioning urban space, home to restaurants, cafés, shops and open public areas that are gradually bringing the former factory grounds back to life. The site is especially appealing to anyone interested in contemporary architecture, industrial buildings, and the story of how Prague's old industrial zones are being reborn as new neighbourhoods.

Getting there and what's nearby

The quarter fits naturally into a riverside stroll — nearby you'll find Císařská louka (Imperial Meadow) and Prokop Valley, both great for a walk or bike ride. Lihovar Smíchov is well worth including as a stop on any tour of modern Prague, a place where the city's industrial history meets its newest architecture.
