New York police detained dozens of participants in a protest against arming Israel at the intersection of 39th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan — the demonstration was organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace movement. Protesters were arrested on Thursday as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, and among those detained was 79-year-old Oscar winner Susan Sarandon.

Protesters held signs reading "Stop Arming Israel" and "Stop the Genocide." Police began making arrests after demonstrators refused to leave the intersection despite repeated orders to disperse. Alongside Sarandon, officers also detained Hacks star Hannah Einbinder — footage shows officers handcuffing the actress in the middle of the demonstration.

Also among those detained were Democratic congressional candidate Dariliz Ávila Chevalier and New York City Council member Chi Ossé.

The protest was directed primarily at Netanyahu, who was speaking at UN headquarters at the time. During his speech, dozens of representatives from countries around the world staged a walkout. The Israeli prime minister sharply criticized both his opponents and former allies who have turned against him in recent months — including the United Kingdom and France, which recently recognized Palestine as a state.
