Plzeň Pull Off Incredible Comeback to Seal European Spot Under New Coach

Plzeň produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of European club football, overturning a three-goal deficit from the first leg to advance to the next round. The victory came in the very first match under new head coach František Kovář, who took over on Sunday after Martin Hyský was sacked.

According to statistics from European competitions since 2000, only a handful of clubs have ever managed to overturn a three-goal deficit — and now Plzeň belongs to that exclusive group. In regulation time, two converted penalties and the sending-off of opponent Omar Bukari early in the second half helped the Czech side level the score. Then, in extra time, substitute defender David Krčík wrote the final, dramatic chapter by netting the winning goal.

"I don't think he's fully grasped yet what we just pulled off. Making it through to the next round feels absolutely incredible," said Plzeň midfielder Norbert Hrošovský, sharing his emotions after the match.

He admitted the team had barely had time to adjust to the new coach, but the players were determined to give everything they had. "We wanted to pour all our energy and passion into this game, to break our run of poor results, keep pounding their box with crosses and pile on the pressure. It worked out brilliantly for us. I'm proud of this team, and I believe this result will give us a real boost for the rest of the season," Hrošovský added.
