Pogačar Stages a Solo Show on Stage 4 of the Vuelta and Seizes the Overall Lead

On the fourth stage of the 2026 Vuelta a España, Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar launched a decisive attack and rode solo to the finish, securing a commanding win on a mountain stage in Andorra. The race took place on Tuesday, after the previous stage — the third — had been cut short due to a hailstorm.

The peloton faced 105 kilometres with four categorised climbs. It was on the second of these that Pogačar delivered the decisive blow: with 4.5 kilometres to go to the summit, he suddenly accelerated and broke away from his rivals, turning the stage into a personal show of strength. Spanish outlet Marca put it bluntly, writing that "Pogačar decided to blow up the Vuelta," while the race's official account noted: "He's not here to win. He's here to dominate."

A Three-Minute Gap and a Wave to a Teammate

After the day's third climb — the Coll d'Ordino — the Slovenian's advantage had grown to three minutes, a gap he essentially held all the way to the finish. Along the way, he even had time to wave to his teammate Adam Yates, who was watching the race from the roadside in civilian clothes.

"From the first climb the pace was high, and on the second we really went full gas. But I attacked and hoped I could hold it to the finish. And it worked out," Pogačar said after crossing the line.

Stage Results and Overall Standings

At the finish, Pogačar's lead over the runner-up, Belgian Wout van Aert, stood at 2 minutes 39 seconds. In the overall standings, his advantage now exceeds three and a half minutes. "That's a good cushion — now I can feel a bit more confident in the coming days, and it's less stressful. But you never know what might happen. Still, we have a strong team to keep things under control," the leader said.

Besides the red jersey of the overall leader, Pogačar now also holds the polka-dot jersey for best climber and the green jersey of the points classification leader. Czech rider Jan Hirt sits 23rd overall, 9 minutes 47 seconds behind.

The 2026 Vuelta is the season's third Grand Tour, running from 22 August to 13 September. Pogačar, who has yet to win this particular race, is considered the clear favourite for overall victory.
