Police probe millions in bank accounts of Prague 3 Green Party candidate

Police are investigating the origin of large sums of money held in the accounts of a Green Party candidate in Prague 3, a well-known campaigner against illegal advertising who goes by the surname Jan. According to the website Odkryto.cz, several dozen of his accounts hold millions of crowns, with total turnover over recent years reaching almost 200 million crowns.

Jan previously worked as an official at the Ministry of Transport, and before that at the Prague branch of the Technical Road Administration (TSK). It is precisely his work there that has also caught the attention of investigators, who have been asking TSK representatives whether Jan was responsible for public procurement. At TSK, he worked as a property management specialist from 2020 to 2023.

What the candidate says

TSK spokeswoman Barbora Liškova declined to confirm or deny what exactly police had asked the organisation about, citing confidentiality of such information.

Jan himself flatly denied the reported figures on the number of accounts and the volume of turnover, calling them untrue. He said that over the past three years he had deposited 549,000 crowns in cash into his account, part of which belonged to his father. "My father receives his pension in cash, but because of his age and illness he doesn't use internet banking or a payment card. So that cash wouldn't pile up at home, I would deposit it into my account and immediately transfer it to him," the candidate explained.

The second portion of the deposited funds, he said, belongs to his partner. "As of today, I have around 7.5 million crowns across my accounts, including investments," Jan clarified.

The politician is also known as the founder of the "Přidej se, strhni to" initiative, which draws the authorities' attention to illegal billboards on city streets and along roads — most often in Prague. He is running tenth on the Green Party's list for Prague 3 in the municipal elections, which will take place on 9–10 October.
