Prague 6 opens new school building in Dejvice and renovated kindergarten in Liboc

The Prague 6 district has completed two major education projects: a new building for the Bílá Primary School in Dejvice on Na Kocínce street, and a fully renovated Libocká kindergarten in Liboc. The news was announced by district mayor Jakub Stárek (ODS).

According to him, both projects address a long-standing need for more school and kindergarten places in the area, and share a common focus on quality architecture, energy efficiency and barrier-free access.

New school building in Dejvice

Construction of the new Bílá School building on Na Kocínce street began in November 2024. The project cost more than CZK 145 million excluding VAT. The bulk of the funding — CZK 100 million — came from the City of Prague, while nearly CZK 38 million was secured as a grant from the Czech Modernisation Fund, which supports energy efficiency in public buildings.

The new building houses eight main classrooms, an after-school club, a canteen and a new courtyard with play equipment. It was built to passive-house energy standards and features a green roof along with water-saving elements. The project was designed by architects Jaroslav Kosnar and Radovan Kupka of the AND studio, who drew inspiration from the functionalist architecture of the neighbouring Bílá School building designed by Jan Gillar.

Deputy mayor for education Marianna Čapková (Prague 6 sobě) noted that the project went through a decade-long process of consultation with local residents and preparatory work. She said it represents more than just a new building — it is a long-term investment in children's education within a modern, energy-efficient environment.

Liboc kindergarten gets a new lease of life

The Libocká kindergarten has undergone a complete transformation. Following the completion of a modern two-storey extension in 2024 and the subsequent renovation of a historic villa, the two now form a single barrier-free complex complete with a lift and a new garden.

The kindergarten has also gained a special class for children with special educational needs. In designing the extension, the architects drew inspiration partly from contemporary Scandinavian kindergartens. The construction cost around CZK 126 million, of which CZK 18 million was provided by the City of Prague. Before construction began, archaeological excavations uncovered Neolithic-era pottery on the site.

"Libocká is a wonderful example of how the character of a historic villa can be sensitively combined with modern architecture. But a modern building alone doesn't make a good kindergarten — what matters most are the people and the atmosphere in which every child feels accepted," Čapková added.

New schools on the way

Mayor Stárek said Prague 6 is planning to build new schools on the sites of former industrial zones and in developing neighbourhoods. In Ruzyně, for example, a school for around 800 pupils is planned, along with other schools tied to development projects. "Education remains a priority for us," Stárek concluded.
