Rout after rout: Baník score 9, Zbrojovka net 10, as a fourth-tier club knocks out Karviná

In the second round of the Czech MOL Cup, Baník Ostrava thrashed Sparta Brno 9:0, while Zbrojovka Brno put ten unanswered goals past Frýdlant nad Ostravicí. Meanwhile, Karviná, the reigning runner-up of the second division, suffered a sensational exit at the hands of fourth-tier side Kozlovice, losing on penalties.

Škrkoň nets four before half-time

The Ostrava hosts gave their opponents no chance at all, scoring six goals in the first half alone. The star of the match was 18-year-old striker Vít Škrkoň, a Czech youth international, who bagged a hat-trick in just 15 minutes, completing it by the 26th minute. By the 41st minute he had already scored five times. Experienced forward Václav Jurečka also got on the scoresheet, converting a penalty. In the second half, Sparta coach Roman Skuhravý made five substitutions at once but kept Škrkoň on the pitch — and the youngster added two more goals, bringing his personal tally to seven. Jurečka and substitute Filip Šancl each added one more. The final score was 9:0 in favour of Baník, who advance comfortably to the next round.

Sensation against Karviná

Karviná, leaders of the country's second-tier league, suffered a genuine shock. The club led 1:0 away at fourth-division side Kozlovice, but conceded the equaliser an hour before full time, and luck sided with the underdogs in the penalty shootout, sending Kozlovice through to the next round.

Other cup results

Besides Baník, seven other top-flight clubs were in action in the second round. Zbrojovka Brno demolished Frýdlant nad Ostravicí 10:0, Mladá Boleslav beat Prague's Meteor 4:0, Pardubice defeated Písek 2:0, Liberec won away at Přepeře 2:0, and Artis Brno got the better of Uherský Brod 2:0. Not every top-division side had it easy, though: Teplice only found the winner against Křimice in the 75th minute, closing out the match 2:1, while Slovácko snatched a 2:1 win over Velká Bíteš just five minutes from the end of regulation time. Earlier on Tuesday, Prague's Bohemians and Zlín had already booked their spots in the next round. The draw for the third round, which will see Slavia, Sparta, Plzeň, Hradec Králové and Jablonec enter the competition, takes place on Friday, 28 August, at 11:00.
