Russia Rejects Sabotage Accusations Over Leipzig Airport, Compares Case to Vrbětice Incident

Germany officially accused Russia this week of a hybrid attack on Leipzig Airport, after an airport worker discovered a drone near a Ukrainian Antonov aircraft on August 4. It later emerged that the drone was carrying explosives, though the detonator apparently failed to go off. In response, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lindak (referred to elsewhere in reports as Macinka) summoned Russian Ambassador to Prague Alexandra Ponomaryova for an explanation.

The Russian Embassy in Prague firmly rejected the accusations, calling them a provocation that benefits only supporters of the Kyiv regime. In a statement posted on Facebook, the Russian mission claimed the situation mirrors the "Skripal case" and the "Vrbětice case" — well-known in the Czech context — incidents which, according to the embassy, Europeans allegedly exploited to stoke Russophobia and undermine relations with Russia.

What Happened at Vrbětice and With the Skripals

As a reminder, the munitions depots at Vrbětice were blown up in 2014 by agents of Russia's military intelligence service GRU, Anatoly Chepiga and Alexander Mishkin. In March 2018, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent — according to the British investigation, the attack was carried out by Russian nationals Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, for whom the UK issued a European arrest warrant. Britain's then-Prime Minister Theresa May stated that both men were GRU agents. The Russian Embassy in Prague insists that "a Russian link in either case has never been proven."

Czechia's Response

According to a statement issued by the Czech Foreign Ministry on Thursday, during the meeting with Ambassador Ponomaryova, the minister dismissed her explanation that the incidents in Germany were provocations serving outside interests. The ministry said its decision is based on convincing evidence provided by the German side, as well as intelligence from two Czech security services.

The minister also informed the ambassador that Czechia will introduce retaliatory measures against Russian diplomatic and technical staff accredited in the country, in response to Moscow's recent tightening of conditions for the Czech diplomatic mission there.
