Russia strikes passenger train just two kilometers from Polish border

Russian forces struck the locomotive of a passenger train in Ukraine's Volyn region, just two kilometers from the border with Poland. Ukraine's national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported the attack on its Telegram channel, without specifying the exact location.

According to the company, Ukrainian authorities warned the train crew of the danger in advance, meaning no one was injured. Oleksandr Shevchenko, deputy director of Ukrainian Railways, told the Suspilne broadcaster that the strike hit near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing.

"Barbarians at the gates of the EU and NATO"

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the attack barbaric. "This is Putin's terror knocking directly on the door of the EU and NATO. Russian barbarians are at your gates, dear partners," he wrote on X.

Sybiha called for immediate "full-force sanctions" against Putin's regime so that Moscow would feel the consequences of its terror. He demanded "uncompromising and decisive steps," along with comprehensive sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex. "Putin must understand that his barbarism will be punished with resolute measures that will raise the cost of war for him to an unacceptable level. This is the only way to stop him," the minister concluded.

Following the attack in western Ukraine, Polish military scrambled fighter jets on Sunday morning to monitor the situation. Warsaw later stated that no violation of Polish airspace had been recorded.

Ukrainian media note that the day before, on Saturday, Russian forces had already struck railway lines in Lutsk and Fastiv.
