Czechia Is Having One of Its Driest Years Since 1961

This year is shaping up to be one of the driest in Czechia since 1961, with the precipitation deficit continuing to grow. That's according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), which notes that the dry trend has actually been building since last year.

According to meteorologists, 2025 ended up in sixth place among the driest years in more than 60 years of records. The winter of 2025/2026 was also short on precipitation — and consequently on snow — making it the ninth driest winter since 1961. Spring 2026, however, set an outright record low: just 89 millimetres of precipitation fell over the three months, the lowest figure ever recorded. Experts warn that this summer risks following the same troubling pattern.

Where it's dry — and where it's worse

Since the start of the year, the Moravian-Silesian Region has seen the most rainfall, with 383 millimetres — 75% of the long-term average. The Southern Moravian Region has fared worst, receiving just 210 millimetres, or 60% of the usual amount.

Among individual weather stations, the situation is best in the Krkonoše Mountains, where the Dvoráky station recorded 803 millimetres of precipitation. Southern Moravia is faring the worst, with stations such as Lanžhot, Hrušky and Šatov reporting less than 150 millimetres since the beginning of the year.

Record lows at individual stations

Several weather stations are logging historic lows. The Červená station in the Low Jeseníky Mountains recorded its lowest precipitation total since measurements began in 1953 — just 270 millimetres. Meteorologists note that the typical average for the region over the same period is around 470 millimetres.
