Sparta Prague Finally Parts Ways with Serbian Forward Birmančević

Prague football club Sparta has officially parted ways with Serbian striker Veljko Birmančević, who is moving to Hungary's Ferencváros. The forward was one of the key figures in the team's 2023/24 campaign, helping the club claim a domestic double.

Birmančević joined Sparta in 2023 on loan from French side Toulouse. Alongside Lukáš Haraslín and Jan Kuchta, he formed a lethal attacking trio that opposing defenses struggled to contain. In his debut season with the Prague club, the Serbian featured in 48 matches across all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 13 assists. He was named the Czech league's best foreign player that season, and Sparta subsequently bought out his contract from the French club.

A Rough Loan Spell and Return

Birmančević continued playing for Sparta until February of this year, when he was loaned out to Spain's Getafe. However, he failed to establish himself in La Liga, making just six appearances across all competitions for the club. He returned to Prague in the summer, but no longer figured in the plans of Sparta's coaching staff, ultimately leading to his permanent departure.

With this move, Birmančević joins the list of notable players who have left Sparta in recent years, following Jan Kuchta, Lukáš Haraslín, Kaan Kairinen, Asger Sørensen and Peter Vindahl.

Wearing Ferencváros colors, the Serbian forward will have another chance to face Viktoria Plzeň, as the Hungarian club is set to meet the Czech side in the Europa League group stage.
