In Ostrava-Svinov, a passenger train fatally struck a man who stepped onto the tracks just before the station entrance. Police say the train was travelling from the centre of Ostrava, and the driver had no time to avoid the collision.
"This was a passenger train coming from the regional capital's centre, and a man ended up on the tracks right before the entrance to Svinov station. The driver was no longer able to avoid hitting him," said police spokeswoman Soňa Štětínská.
According to Martin Kavka, spokesman for the Railway Administration, the incident brought traffic on the main railway corridor between Ostrava-Svinov and Ostrava-Hlavní nádraží stations to a complete halt for more than half an hour. Trains were then temporarily allowed through on a single track with a speed restriction in the area of the accident.
At the time of the incident, there were 23 passengers on board the train, none of whom were injured. The driver tested negative for alcohol, the police spokeswoman added.
