US President Donald Trump has announced that the American navy has completely cleared the Strait of Hormuz of mines. According to him, all mines in the strait's international waters have either been removed or detonated, and Iran has been warned that any vessel laying new mines will be immediately and systematically destroyed.
Before the US-Iran war began, roughly 20% of the world's oil and natural gas supplies passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Its closure sent shockwaves through global oil prices. Trump has repeatedly claimed that American forces control the strait, though according to the BBC, Iran continues to attack vessels attempting to pass through without authorization.
This week, the US announced new sanctions against the Iranian regime. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned all countries maintaining financial ties with Iran that if they fail to cut them off, they too will face international isolation.
