Vondroušová to appeal four-year doping ban over missed test

Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has filed an appeal against the four-year ban handed down to her in June by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The punishment stems from her refusal to undergo an out-of-competition doping test late last year.

According to Vondroušová herself, a representative of the German anti-doping agency showed up at her home on December 3 outside the one-hour window that athletes are required to specify daily in a special system, indicating when and where they can be located for testing. This argument formed the core of her defence.

Mood in the tennis community has shifted

Vondroušová initially received widespread support from fellow players and experts. However, after the ITIA published a detailed report on the investigation, opinion around her case shifted noticeably.

In its lengthy statement, the ITIA noted that the independent tribunal was sympathetic toward the player but had little real choice in setting the severity of the sanction.

Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick admitted that he, too, initially sided with the Czech player. "I really was on her side at first and thought she'd been treated too harshly. But building a defence around being too afraid to open the door, only to then go out and walk the dog and sign the form afterward... I don't know, it just looks strange. It disappointed me a bit. I think that defence only made things worse for her," Roddick said.

What comes next for the tennis star

If Vondroušová's appeal is rejected, her suspension will run until June 21, 2030, by which point she will be 31 years old.
