Two major wildfires broke out almost simultaneously on the Greek island of Salamis on Sunday, in the areas of Peristeria and Selinia. In Peristeria, firefighters discovered the bodies of two victims at one of the private homes — according to Greek media, an elderly local couple.
A large-scale battle against the flames
More than 140 firefighters are tackling the blazes, backed by dozens of fire trucks, specialised forestry crews and volunteers. Firefighting planes and helicopters have also been deployed. Strong winds are complicating efforts, while thick smoke has sharply reduced visibility across the region.
Emergency evacuation under way
Greece's civil protection system has sent residents several alerts urging them to leave danger zones immediately. People from the Peristeria area are being directed towards Ajantio. Because roads risk being cut off, the coast guard is preparing a sea evacuation — two ferries have already been sent to the beaches to pick up residents.
